Saw the tape this afternoon. Originally I'd planned just to watch a few minutes to compare it to Cabaret. I watched it to the end. Halliwell calls it a "flat and flabby treatment" of Isherwood's work.
I liked Julie Harris as Sally and Shelly Winters as the rich, Jewish girl. Laurence Harvey was a little stiff in the role of "Chris" Isherwood, but not bad. Maybe he was supposed to be "repressed". I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, that Isherwood was gay. The rich guy, Clive was not well done. Still,overall, I liked it.
Has anyone compared this one to the book, and is it really "flat and flabby"?
Oh, yes, definite comparison here with "Breakfast at Tiffany's" the movie. Sally=Holly, etc. What do you think? Did Capote "adapt" a bit from Isherwood?
