This is the true story of the 1913 U.S. Open (golf) where a young Francis Ouimet beat the legendary Harry Vardon in a playoff round. The film was shot on the the fairways and greens of The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, where the actual game was played. The Ouimet house still stands across the street and figures in the action. A sub plot has Ouimet and his father estranged over the father's refusal to let the young man play. The film avoids the usual Hollywood "underdog wins" cliches and explores new points of view in the cinematography of the golf shots. Actor Bill Paxton directed, his second such effort.
