Is the new "Fog" as bad as it looks in the trailers?

I can't come up with one reason why John Carpenter and Debra Hill would want to remake "The Fog"--unless they were THAT disappointed with the original. IMO, the original was a very good ghost story: decent acting, creepy plot, eerie score, surprise ending. I think it's one of Carpenter's more underrated films, but all my friends hate it. "Halloween" was a hard act to follow, and that's probably why "The Fog" hasn't gotten the attention I think it deserves. BTW, the new, remastered version features a great transfer.
