Compared to El Topo, Sante Sangre is beautful and reasonably normal, for Jodorowski, that is.El Topo played at the old Elgin Theatre (now the Joyce) in Chelsea (NYC) for almost a year at midnight in the 1970s. I saw it several times and was there the night Jodorowski took the stage and answered questions.
Because El Topo reached such cult status it stayed alive (thanks in part to a Japanese only Laserdisc). Copyright problems reared their ugly head and it took some time before a DVD was made but it is now available.
The laserdisc was cut (censored?). I have yet to see the DVD and I hope it is not. Frankly the cuts do serious damage to the film which was (and is) unsettling and WAY wierd but has a much better flow in the original. At least as I recall, it was a long time ago.
