George Reeves Superman 1st Season DVD Review

I just finished viewing all 26 episodes of the first season of the "Superman" TV series from the early fifties starring George Reeves. Though I've seen most of them already, there were a few I hadn't seen. Overall, I really like this DVD set. It includes a short feature from 1940 starring George, called "Pony Express". Also, some Reeves commercials for breakfast cerial are included.

Lois Lane is played by Phyllis Coates in this series. I liked "the other Lois", Noel Neil, just as well. PC's Lois, and NN's Lois, are as far removed as night and day. I describe the NN Lois as soft and mushy, and the PC Lois as steel and ice. PC's Lois is a tough, fiercely independent, all business, in your face, sassy, take no flack, no nonsense business woman. In one episode, she confronts and defies armed thugs who hold her hostage, with no fear displayed. NN's Lois is more approachable, personable, not confrontational, and shows emotion. Lois' character is an important part of the show, and PC plays it very well.

I've always liked the way George Reeves played Superman, and equally important, Clark Kent. In these episodes, GR is great. I feel that the world of Metropolis and the Daily Planet really exists.

The story plots are good, albeit corny at times. The criminals are ruthless and the violence is quite visible, but not as graphic as contemporary crime dramas. The one hour episode, "Superman and the Mole Men", is a bit too preachy for me, but it carried a good message regarding compassion.

If you liked the show, this DVD set will be enjoyable. If you are too young to remember the show, maybe, maybe not. I really like it, and I await the follow up DVD sets for the remaining seasons.
