I vaguely remember seeing this in the theatre during those blurry days. It is quite an impressive production and features a treasure trove of English actors: Oliver, Harry Andrews, Jack Hawkins, Ian Holm, and a baby-faced Brian Cox. All the guys I enjoyed seeing during my younger years. I had forgotten the length of this film but the dvd actually has a built-in intermission. The overall dvd production (color and sound) is very good. The story starts with the birth of Czarovich Alexis and traces Nicky's (Jayston) and Alexandria's (Suzman) downward spirial to abdication and death. Nicky's return to Alexandria, after abdicating, is an emotionally wrenching scene. (I wonder if Nixon went through this.) The royal family's subsequent imprisonment shows the complexity of the constantly changing political forces playing out on their fates.
While watching I had the strangest feeling that this movie was made in the 40's. It seemed so "classic" in its direction and dialogue. Still, it's not a bad way to kill three hours or so.
