Re: Will the new Hollywood boy wonder Rob Marshall (Chicago-dir.) hit gold again with Memoirs Of A Geisha....

I hope you're right as I liked the book a great deal and I've a longstanding interest in Japan. I have a negative knee-jerk reaction to the use of non-Japanese for key roles. There is a depth and range to the native Japanese theatrical and cinematic tradition that at least equals that of other Asian lands. I don't believe for a second that absolutely suitable Japanese performers could not have been found. Although written by an American it is a Japanese story...

To me the trailer seemed as phony as a three dollar bill; overwrought, bloated "drama," overlit, overthought. Like a self-consciously epic, almost King Kong-y approach to the refinement of Geisha life. But, it's just a trailer. I'll go see it and reserve real judgement until then.
