"Friday Night-" like are what you'd expect... be prepared for a big shock in this film based on a true serial killer's brief but extraordinarily violent time in Paris.
Two brothers from Martinique, searingly portrayed, find it difficult to adjust to their new lives in the City of Lights, as does a beautiful young woman from E. Europe.
This film won't insult your intelligence by scapegoating the dominant culture or portraying the immigrants as hopeless victims.
If you're curious about the seamier side of Parisian night life, you'll enjoy this film for that alone.
It's not a "who-done-it" because the killer is revealed quite early on; yet, the hideousness and inevitability of the crimes, the lack of police progress, and the cleverness of the killer create a deepening sense of horror.
This is a very clever film that proves that car chases, fights and shootouts, and courageous police aren't necessary ingredients to a brilliant film about crime.
