Vic,Two Israeli women in Herzliya told me just that. I didn't even know
who Lior was until I saw Late Marriage. I saw him in person at the main arts theater in Jerusalem and we do look alike.I'm a lot taller though - by about 6 inches.
Israeli film of late has been tanking in Israel and doing very well abroad.
Late Marriage, Broken Wings, Kippur, Kadosh, Ushpizin...Syrian Bride is a new one playing in Europe and is very good.
I asked one of my friends there who works in the media why Israel produced so few great films and the response was that the screenplays being written were such crap that nobody wanted to produce them. The budgets are small, the interest in Israeli film even smaller, and Hollywood films take in all of the money.
My great-uncle owned a movie theater chain in Israel in the 50s/60s/70s and Israeli films did very well back then. He'd show an Israeli film as the opening act and then some American film as the feature.
John Wayne was big.
Of course, you can read all about this in the 1st/2nd Issues of AW, but I don't want to self-promote.
