"Grizzly Man:" Imagine Napoleon Dynamite cloned from

Crocodile Man and you'll be prepared.
This is a very upsetting film because of the zany, obviously compulsive and suicidal, and at times delightful character of Tim Treadwell. We seldom get to know a person so well and then see, when they are still so young, them come to a grisly end.
That his female companion also was killed adds to the viewer's desire to distance oneself from him by blaming him for her death.
But Herzog doesn't deal in simplicities.
We are told, sometimes in embarrassing details provided by his friends, colleagues, and family, what a unique individual he was and how he came to care more for these grizzlies than for his very life.
Perhaps some of the very negative reactions to this film can be traced to the realization that his brave and reckless dedication puts a bland, safe, consumerist life into stark relief?
Herzog has done a masterful job in quietly portraying this very unusual man, a strange combination of both Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
(It's on Discovery Channel but, quite literally, it's four minutes of film and four of ads for a long period in the middle, perhaps half of the film, so I'd recommend a rental).
