a prequel in this case, rise up to the same standard?
This is a very nice effort and deepens the understanding of the plot and characters in IA I.
It's not great art, or anything, but the excellent acting, clever writing, and resistance to over-the-top shoot-outs and over-dramatization elevates it far above the average crime drama.
This is the director's Hong Kong paean to The Godfather, which it attempts to match in scope. It falls short, artistically, but not by that much...
