"Target Earth"-1954: A DVD MiniReview.

68.1.145.72

Genre: Sci-Fi. Company: Allied Artists. Produced by Herman Cohen. Directed by Sherman Rose. Actors: Richard Denning; Kathleen Crowley; Virginia Grey; Richard Reeves; Whit Bissell. B&W. 75 minutes. Widescreen 1:85:1 aspect ratio. Digitally remastered. Based on short novel, "The Deadly City", by Paul Fairman.

Due to budget restrictions, interesting premise never comes to fruition in this story about five people trapped in an evacuated large city occupied by an invading force of alien robots. Although acting is competent enough, main protagonist Denning never assumes an active role in defeating the army of robots (actually there's only one robot, a rather hokey one at that, Gort it ain't!).

Too much talk and not enough buildup action. No significant aura of menace was generated in "Target Earth"....a big letdown if one was expecting anything resembling a climax. Truncated ending. Some comic relief due to various dialogue and robot. My fave scene is early on when said people view robot's shadow on a building for first time. That to me, was eeriest scene of whole film.

I bought this DVD out of historical curiousity and do not regret the purchase, however, I recommend "Target Earth" to only the most ardent of 1950's sci-fi film fans. Very watchable on TV, however, if one has a batch of popcorn on hand.

Special features include Video Tribute to producer Cohen and bios of actors and director Rose (both of which I found interesting) and various trailers. ~AH
