I read the book a few years ago and finally saw the film on television a few weeks ago. (Better late then never, right?) They were both excellent.The connection between Willie and Marie/May does indeed appear to be superfluous in the film, but it was an important acspect in the book. Willie would never have become the man he proved himself to be without her.
I was a little disappointed that the part of the story where Willie saves the Caine after an attack while Queeg abandons command was deleted... but I guess in a way it helps the film from making Queeg look *completely* unfit as a captain.
