Yes, human beings can be difficult to put up with for those used to solitude and absolute quiet. Remember that in the days of the Globe, Shakespeare play attendees often had raucous parties, drunken louts screaming away, commonly holding forth at performances.
Operas, we are told, also were affairs where much chatter and socializing occurred in the "Golden Age."
How antiseptic and cold we wish our society to become (ok, I draw the line at cell phone calls...).
