Re: According to interviews with Davis about her role....she looked forward to filming this movie...

Your reference to the rivalry between these two screen legends reminds me of a very funny story (I can't quite remember where I heard it, or read it) about the filming of WEHTBJ:

Apparently, there is a scene in the film during which Bette is required to drag the handicapped Crawford across the floor for quite some distance. It is reported that Crawford deliberately flubbed this scene during filming over and over again, to make Bette suffer and groan as much as possible. It is even said that Crawford filled her pockets with heavy weights to make the task all the more difficult, and delicious.

It's the most memorable confrontation of Prima Donnas in film history, except, perhaps, for the DeNiro/Pucino duel in, what was it called, "Heat"? During this film, it is rumored, though I don't know it for a fact, that the two never appeared on set together at the same time, and that the scenes requiring them both to be together at the same time used the same technique that was used for "The Patty Duke Show," in which Ms. Duke played two identical cousins. (Am I THAT old, already?)

Cheers!
