Mountain."
Minus the scenery, of course, though there are some shots of the world's greatest waterfalls, Foz d'Iguazu.
Wong unites his two favorite male leads in this film of love lost, recaptured, and lost again (actually, several times). The film follows two young male lovers as they venture from Hong Kong to Buenos Aires; the brilliance of Wong is that he does NOT include scenes of disorientation and language difficulty. We know that happens, why waste time? Rather, allows the two actors to PORTRAY the results of these pressures.
As usual with Wong, in other words, it's not so much what happens as HOW, thereby making the reviewer's job difficult.
Tony Leung gives his usually fine, nuanced performance and, by his standards, "lets loose" in a few scenes. Leslie Cheung also is excellent as the less dependable, more free-spirited guy.
The film has a bit of the Wim Wenders classic "Alice in the Cities" flavor, though these two titans portray listlessness, boredom, and soul-weariness very differently.
By now you understand that it's like Ang Lee's effort in general theme, only, and in a very different way, just as excellent.
