"The prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio"

Julianne Moore plays a mother of 10 in the late fifties and earky sixties in suburban Ohio, Her husband (Woody Harrelson) is a machinist and an alcoholic who spends most of his wages on beer and whiskey. The relentlessly upbeat and cheerful Moore helps the family by entering and winning manufacturers' contests for jingles and slogans. Most of the prizes are of little use (pogo sticks, a pony) but some are in cash or big ticket items that can be sold. Eventually Moore hooks up with fellow "contester" Laura Dern and her cronies, who live about 100 miles away. The film is based on a true story, a book by one of the real children. All the now adult children show up at the end and a couple are Ph.D's and a couple of others are writers. Heart warming, engaging, and recommended. Very well acted. The two family cars in the picture, a 1936 Ford and then an early fifties Chevy are exactly what my parents owned at the time.
