Ingrid Bergman is a China missionary wannabe in 1920's London and with the help of people who take pity on her ends up in a remote village in a northern province of China as assistant to an elderly woman missionary who is starting an Inn whee she will preach during meals to the caravans stopping by. Wjen the woman dies Bergman takes over and is soon appointed foot inspector to see that the new government ban on female foot binding is adhered to. She soon becomes know as Jan-Ai, the woman who loves people. She develops a working relationship with the local mandarin and eventually a romantic one with a half breed soldier, Curt Jurgens (cast as half Asian in typcical Hollywood fashion like Rrdo Montobaln in "Sayonara" or Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis as Native Americans in "Apache" and "The Outsider"). An interesting story, based on the life of a real person. Frddie Young did the Cinemascope cinematography.
