I am just finishing the Comprehensive Edition, the final of the three released in this set. I watched them over several days , not all in a row so the film had a chance to distill in my subconscious while remaining relatively fresh in my consciousness.Again a quality in Welles's films reaches in to me in a unique way.Seem somehow dreamlike.I had been concerned from what i heard that this Comprehensive version, which is discussed by the people involved in its compilation in the disk extra features, might be difficult to watch as the European Edition has the best image quality .I gather now that as much of it was used here and pieces which had been edited out of that yet retained in other editions were added as they were found but the image quality never becaseu noticeably degraded as i had feared.I'm not sure why, and it may be nothing more than the black and white film but i think the use of flashbacks also, brought to mind the Saragossa Manuscript which also had a lot of dialog and storytelling from a wide variety of characters. Not that its especially relevant to the movie but i also noticed a transitory parallel with The Polanski film; The Ninth Gate and wondered if this film in any superficial way influenced the Balkan/Corso relationship or if it is just my brains natural aptitude for recognizing similarities and patterns.
