from Abel Ferrara: Mary

This is a film within a film film.. errr, yeh, that's right... in fact more than that...
Its a bout a TV presenter (Forest Whitaker)interviewing people about religious beliefs including people from a film about Jesus but the film pivots about the actress playing Mary Magdalene (Juliet Binoche) who becomes obsessed with her character and almost literally disappears into the role, not returning to the USA and staying in what I presume is Israel. Some of the scenes from the Jesus film are also shown.
Superimposed on this is the ongoing pregnancy of the Tv presenter's wife.
While I enjoyed some of the moving between the layers of the film reality, I thought that ultimately it seemed to get lost in whatever its message was, and the actuality of the storyline was too trivial and the characters too uninteresting.
On the other hand its certainly pacey and eventful.
And it contains a great quote about Mel Gibson..
sked why (look away now if you don't want to know...) he made the Jesus film, the writer/director/actor says offhandedly words something like...
"That Gibson guy made his film and it made a billion".
Which of course leaves open the question of why this one was made, but...
