There has been some discussion on the fruitfulness of great movies from various eras. I used the AFI list of 100 greatest movies over 100 years as a reference. This is how they toll up decade by decade.
1990-99 7
1980-89 6
1970-79 15
1960-69 17
1950-59 19
1940-49 12
1930-39 13
1920-29 2
1910-19 1
Looks like the decline did happen in the 80s by this survey.
