In this Wolfgang Peterson film, Dustin Hoffman is a career Army physician working in disease control. He is in the process of divorcing Rene Russo, who does dimilar work for the CDC. He reports to Morgan Freeman, who in turn reports to Donald Sutherland. When a mysterious virus hits a rural California town Hoffman is sent in and soon discovers that the virus, lasy seen years before in Africa, has mutated and is now transmitted by airborne particles as well as contact with the victims. Just as he appears o be making progress, he is ordered off the case by Freeman (under Sutherland's direction) for questionable reasons. He disobeys orders and with the help of Cuba Gooding (hardly believeable as a Major with helicopter training) and Russo searches for the host animal. It's a hoot to see Hoffman in an action picture and if you totally suspend disblief (difficult) the film is a lot of fun.
