Steve Martin successfully maintained the tone of his novella in his screenplay for this off beat romantic study of a glove sales person at Sak's involved with two men, one scruffy and penniless and the other older and rich and sophisticated. Clare Danes plays the lead and is a struggling sales clerk with a huge college debt which will take her years to pay off. She has moved from her native Vermont to L.A. to make it big as an artist (photography) but so far nothing has happened. After a couple of dates with the scruffy guy (Jason Shwartzman) including sex, she sells a pair of gloves to Ray Porter (Martin) who send them to her apartment as a gift. The triangle develops throughout the movie, and Danes is hard pressed to choose between the two men. The movie has a low key, realistic tone and an ending that is bittersweet but in sync with the story. Recommended.
