There are a number of films I saw in the cinema many years ago that stick in my memory, often as much for mood or something else intangible, as for anything else. 2 of those films are Tarkovsky films, 'Andrei Rubilev" and "Solaris". "Solaris" is soon to be released here in Australia and I'll pick up a copy as soon as it is. "Andrei Rubilev" doesn't seem to be released and no indication that it will be, which is a pity. The things that stand out for me in my memory of "Andrei Rubilev" are a world weary mood accompanying the story, pretty much exemplefied by the quote you mentioned, and the wonderful sense of light and space that accompanied the shift from black and white during the story to colour for the final scenes of his works.
It must have been a good 35 years or so ago, maybe a bit longer, that I saw it and it still stands out in my memory.
