Re: Is "Castaway" a castaway?

I saw it last night. I would not call it a blockbuster but I would also not pan it. Say three stars of four. I agree the director did not put the usual and expected scenes, such as TH getting the girl in the end, or a shark fight somewhere, or more tension in the lobby with the husband.

But you are missing the point. The director is comparing our inability to effectively interact in a lush society with TH's ability to survive in a desolate one. That was the message in all the interactions from the very beginning. We struggle with, and don't value, the simplest of interactions. TH's inability to talk to his friend about his dying wife in the beginning and being able to look him in the eye are say "I am sorry I was not there for you" in the end. The party in the hotel room where they served sushi and crab; the inability of the guests to empathize with TH. The girl at the end was the answer to "you never know what might blow ashore". TH did not have to pursue her, her mere wispy entrance and exit proved the point. Just like not showing us what was in the package. It was the package, not the contents that saved his life.

One interesting point is in the length of time it took TH to leave. Five years to determine it was better to risk one's life than to miss life. I wonder how long it would take me, hopefully not five years. Sitting here at my computer with a bottle of water and a phone, I think it would take me about six months. But then I would have died because I would not have been in tune with the winds.

I agree I expected a better film than I got. And many of the messages were not subtle enough, kind of in your face. Not as bad as U571, but similar in that they made a clear list of points and then answered them. But the message was clear and the protagonists conversion successful.

I think I will go get a chocolate . . .
