What they lack in strictly technical areas they often more than compensate for in artistic aspects. You see much more of the raw performance.
But what does surprise me is the wealth of what was produced and is available in what we can call either old or classic, depending upon your view. There are still thousands of great old movies that I have not seen. Too bad many of them I can't even get here. It is hard to get works by the classic European greats, unfortunately. But on the positive side, this is the area where the American cinema had produced mountains of wonderful films. Too bad they have lost their touch later.
