I always loved him, his unusual cold face with deep emotions hidden under icy appearance.

Perhaps his best role was general Khludov in "Beg" based on Bulgakov's material. I think it might be available with English subs, so I highly recommend it. The film itself is not great in my view (although very nightly rated on imdb), but there are wonderful performances. Would be a very nice new branch from mainstream to investigate, I think.
