I was not as impressed with the film, but I have to admit I was watching under the tireless artillery barrage - when my wife dislikes something she sometimes enters that mode of constant nasty comments - I have not heard her this negative since the LoTR... so I am perhaps not the best judge of that work. Plus it was on a tape... bummer... I suspect some day I might get it on a DVD to revisit. But since you love venturing into dark corners examining them at your peril, I would suggest you do look at Kira Muratova.
Her outlook on life is very dark and often extremely unpleasant - if you can sit through the Three Stories and not lose your believe in mankind you have done great!
But she is not just about being depressing, unpleasant, moody, cynical... so I feel very safe recommending her works.
If you manage to find any, go right in, let me know what you find, but Three Stories, The Asthenic Syndrome and Nastroyschik would be on top of my list.
One word of caution... last night I needed to finish the Three Stories - just the last one of them (I had seen the film before...) and my wife immediately left the room... so I am not going to be responsible for any normal family life interruptions, I am warning you!
