This may be the movie of the year. Each and every actor delivered the goodies with unflinching precision in this ensemble most reminiscent of "American Beauty" in its scope. Brian Cox and Annette Benning brought it home with stellar performances and Alec Baldwin nailed his role as the worn-out, alcoholic father.
The script was fresh and fraught with emotion with nary a moment of dragging. We see young Augusten being mishaped by his doting mom (into be gay) much to the bewilderment of his dad. Mom defends her emotional hysterics claiming it "artistic" temperament and eventually drives dad out of the house. Mom is seeing a somewhat unconventional doctor who eventually leads her down a path of perverse pharmacology that begins to destroy her life as well as Augusten's. Mom flirts with lesbianism while Augusten is convinced he is gay. They both take same-sex lovers and the plot gets more dense and dark. Until things finally go broken.
This is a must see.
