Hard to make generalizations, and I would not venture to compare it to the output of such great producers as the US or France, but there is definitely life there. For a while it seemed like the film industry and interest in films in general was dying in Russia, but today there are many multi-screen theaters apparently doing well. The Russians always loved movies, and after a brief lull they are getting back into that routine. One has, however, to distinguish two trends. One is the "inside" movies, those that speak to the Russian soul and are deeply rooted in the Russian life, and would be hard to understand by a foreigner (there are many such works), and those of the more universal nature, and these tend to make it to the West.
