Babel: Multi Cultural Grit

Tired of hearing near-do-wells whining about not getting their piece of the American Pie? Take them to see this one. It should make anybody with a conscience appreciate his circumstances when compared to the Moroccan countryside which is the central plot focus of the film.

We open with Pitt and Blanchett touring Morocco for some unexplained reason when Blanchett is hit by a random rifle shot from a Moroccan youth. From here the story broadens to the USA, Mexico, and Japan where each story is seemingly independent but actually tied by a very thin thread. We are exposed to a broad range of cultural emotions from an angry Japanese teen and her concerned father, illegal Mexican aliens making tragic decisions, Brit tourists concerned only for themselves, and the charity of a Morocco man.

While I wouldn't call this film spell binding it is certainly an interesting story filmed in a gritty, realistic style. And, as in real life, not all the stories have a happy ending.

Definitely worth a see.
