Catch A Fire

There are films that impress you with great acting, films that impress with great stories or even great FX. And there are films that leave youn feeling as if you have been hit by a truck.
Catch A Fire is Philip Noyce's true story of an ordinary man (Derek Luke)in apartheid South Africa. An ordinary black man. A foreman with a wife and family. And another ordinary man (Tim Robbins) who is a white detective in th anti-terrorist unit. He also has a family.
The story is written by Shawn Slovo who father Joe was one of the few white members of the ANC.
The story is of how violence, continual embedded violence breeds hatred and also of how circumstances force people in extreme situations into doing extreme things.
These days of course there is an obvious parallel with the effects of the "war on terrorism" in radicalising young moslems.
This is a small personal film that carries huge weight. It also has an unexpected twist at the very end, unexpected by me anyway.
There is violence. Sudden ugly violence that slams into you, and a depressing feeling that we are all capable of making a mess of the planet, but at the end I was left with the strength and courage of the human spirit to overcome and to move on.
