I saw this this afternoon immediately (3 minutes) after seeing Borat and it was interesting as both include "real" and acted scenes.
Its the story of Rupert Kathner and Alma Brooks who made films, annoyed both the police and the gangsters and took on the Hollywood bosses who ran the Australian film industry back in the 30s and onwards.
Constantly one step ahead of the debt collectors and often on the run from the police this fascinating duo thought Australia should have its own film industry showing Australian stories and made almost the only Australian produced films during the period through the 50s.
Its shot against backgrounds of old photos and is very inventive in its use of simple effects to create a real dreamworld.Interspersed are interviews with people involved, historians, and relatives.
Its a very good view of a wild country and a time long gone. Try and find a DVD of it and curl up on the sofa for a glimpse of Australia the real wild frontier.
