Manderlay

Lars von Trier's sequel to Dogville and it will appear familiar with scene's delineated by lines drawn on the white floor and sraea named "Bathhouse" "Table" "Garden" etc.
No Kidman this time, and we both thought that a good thing. Instead Bryce Dallas Howard as Grace Margaret Mulligan.
The film is presented as something as close to a play in that th action is largely nominal and the meat of the film is in the dialogue and the reactions of the cast to each other.
The film starts with Grace, her family and entourage stopping and finding a slave about to be punished. As this is America in 1933, slavery 70 years past its abolition, they investigate and GRace stays to help bring democracy to the now freed slaves.
The parallels to many many real events is pretty easy to see, whether that was intended or not.
Its quite a long film heading for 2 1/2 hours but divided into 8 "acts" which splits it nicely and accompanied by beautiful music giving it the feel of almost a Peter Greenaway at times.
This is a very powerful film for those who like to have their brain stimulated but its also beautifully filmed considering the black background to almost everything. Its also funny, sad, and its deeply thought provoking. A couple of people walked out but it was an invited advance screening so perhaps some people didn't know what they were going to get.
