The fully restored Faust (Murnau; 1926; Euraka Masters of Cinema #24; Region 2)

One of the finest German Expressionist films made during the silent era; this restoration includes a choice of two scores, one orchestral, the other harp, and presents the older export version on Disc 2 for comparison. It's worth noting that the alternate version was edited from different takes for foreign (non-German) audiences; it differs greatly from the domestic German release (see link below). The only downside is the 4% speed-up inherent with PAL releases, but the visual impact is negligeable. Until this richly deserving title is selected by Criterion for a Region 1 release (it is assumed that any NTSC version, if properly transferred, wouldn't have that 4% speed-up) we probably won't see a better representation of this silent masterpiece. Highly recommended! (**** 1/2 stars)
