I went to the Brisbane premiere last night and thought this frothy mixture a wasted opportunity. The titles suggest a punk princess or at least an irreverent approach to showing the monarchy (anarchy in Versailles?) but this immediately disappears in a whirl of dresses and cakes, most of which, like the film, have one bite taken and are then disgarded. Even a neat idea like using several Bow wow wow tracks (BWW had an "underage" singer).
I believe the real dauphin and dauphine were much younger than the actors and the line "we are too young to rule" sits awkwardly in the film. In fact little emerges about the royal couple other than he seems to know little about his hobby of lock making but instead likes to go hunting a lot and that she has little understanding of even court behaviour let alone the world outside her immediate circle.
Frankly I thought the trailer better than the film especially in its use of the New Order track.
A curiously unsatisfying cake... errr film where you were left willing the mob to arrive and behead everyone in sight.
