1975 World Series - Cincinnati Reds vs. Boston Red Sox

I've been wondering when, if ever, this event would be released on DVD, in its entirety. I saw it yesterday at Borders and bought it for $69.99 US. I watched it live in 1975, being an Ohian and avid Cincinnati Reds fan. Even then, it was billed as the greatest Series ever, and was predicted to remain so for many years to come. The 31 years which have elapsed have affirmed that notion.

Normally, I just don't get too excited about viewing a sports event whose outcome is already decided. But the '75 Series is worth reviewing. The level of play from both teams is stellar. It's a shame that one team had to lose, because that team, Boston, put on a performance that most Series winners in other years don't match. The heroics of players on both teams must be appreciated. Look for Boston outfielder Fred Lynn's acrobatic feats including hurling himself into the wall with reckless abandon. Look for Boston pinch-hitter Bernie Carbo getting two HR's in a single Series. Look for Cincinnati outfielder George Foster's catch in foul territory and throw home retiring a runner on an attempted sacrifice fly. Look for Cicinnati 1st baseman Tony Perez' game 7 homer over the "Green Monster" which, last I heard, is still airborn. And of course, Boston catcher Carlton Fisk's game 6 12th inning homer is historic.

Also, the players are well conditioned, but they don't have the bulk that today's have. Steroids I suppose? The graphics are quite primitive by today's standards. Curt Gowdy was the announcer. If you remember him, you're no spring chicken (neither am I).

Of all the games, no. 6 was stellar, and has been called the greatest baseball game ever played. I have yet to see it equalled, let alone surpassed. The '75 Series was the best ever, and game 6 was the best game of that Series. If you only have time to view just one game of the '75 Series, choose game 6.

There are no commercials. The play is for the most part continuous, sans commercials. Of course the break between halves of innings is skipped, but the action flows smoothly.

The video and audio are quite good. On game 7, only in a few spots does the audio or video fade, and only for a second. I didn't miss anything important. I have not yet viwed games 1-6

Overall, I'm excited that I have this collection, and eagerly await viewing all of it. I've only viewed one game so far. It brings back memories and excitement. It is amazing how great a sport can be when both sides play at the level shown in 1975.

If you enjoy baseball, get it. Even a young fan born well after 1975 will appreciate this set. BR
