Dreamgirls has finally opened

I saw it this afternoon and I have never heard of the musical that preceded it by a lot of years or so I am told.
Its the story heavily fictionalised of Motown and The Supremes (The Dreams).
Its about 2 hours and its zips along. Although a lot of the music is heavily Motown influenced I was repeatedly reminded it was a musical and some of the dialogue is in song.
It is colourful and pacey and the singing and the cinematography are great. Beyonce looks great but the real star is Jennifer Hudson (in my opinion) as the one ejected from the band as they get big.
There are other Motownesque characters and you can see the changes on America/music/black culture as the actors are cut against newsreel footage and some recreations of the USA in the 60s (and early 70s).
ITs very entertaining but don't expect to see a documentary.
Hudson sounds like Mavis Staples and the standalone song in the middle of the film is breathtaking. Really.
I liked it a lot.
