Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer

This is taken from Suskind's novel and is quite a wayward tricky film. If you've read the book then I guess you know why that would be.
To start with its about a guy making perfumes and cinema doesn't do sensurround for noses!
Some of the film revels in its sensory experience in an almost Malick kind of way, especially I thought early on.
A few scenes seemed to merrily go right beyond the reasonable and even the pretentious and head straight for fruitcake territory. But that was also their strength I think in that it carried the story on and forced you to the required suspension of disbelief.
Which is certainly needed at the end where there is a scene which could be a late 60s Italian hippy dream sequence. Look I'm trying to describe it without spoiling it for any one, and its not easy.
The absolute end scene is perhaps the only way to finish this story which has clear overtones of christianity about it but is much more centred in the realm of the senses.
Its one to sit around and discuss afterwards but if you go with a significant other be prepared for a different kind of fun!
