"The Big Country"

This is a range war western starring Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Carol Baker, Jean Simmons, Charles Bickford, Burl Ives, and Chuck Connors. We are constanly reminded by the characters and cinematography how BIG the country is and I found myself syaing it at every vista long shot. Peck is a successful sea captain from the east who comes out west to cattle baron Bickford's sprawling ranch to wed Bickford's daughter (Baker), who he has met in Baltimore. He and foreman Heston take an immediate dislike to each other, exacerbated by Peck'e refusal to be pushed into a confrontation. Peck eventually falls in love with schoolteacher Simmons, Baker's supposed best friend, who also owns the ranch between Bickford's and arch rival Ives'. When a range war is escalated, Peck tries to stop it. Predictable but fun to see all the stars interact and to watch the Panavision/technicolor scenery. The DVD is much brighter and more satisfying than the laserdisc. Peck felt that the story was an allegory for the Cold War.
