A perfect work of art with as fine a group of actors as ever I've seen in one film. Not one flaw; a genuine masterpiece.
I have always thought Auteil's "breakthrough" role as Lacenaire in "The Elegant Criminal," was overrated. Well, playing the same character, Marcel Herrand turns in one of the greatest film performances I've ever seen: he creates a fully formed character---philosophy, temperament, morals---in very few scenes with little dialogue. Charming, intelligent, and a cold-blooded murderer. Convincingly played!
A truly astonishing performance.
At any rate, this film is so famous, I won't bother to say much except that it belongs up there on anyone's "15 Best Films" list.
I IMDB'd Monsieur Herrand and I'm a little shocked he didn't have a more illustrious career, at least in film.
Lacenaire lives.
