Such a beautifully simple film and such real performances (don't even want to call them that) from the few actors. I was especially taken by the young soldier. And, of course the Afghani student and old man were wonderful.I loved the small touches that gave us glimpses into the heart of the main character (or at least the heart of that moment in time for him). His reaction to almost running off the road and to the earth movers and piles of dirt (he was clearly - I think - more worried of being buried alive then of actually dying though he was clearly contemplating the latter very deeply)... and of course watching him watch the sunset. Also the simple but moving symbology of the tree and the glimpse into his life (loneliness?) by seeing into his apartment on the fateful night.
Mostly I like the message that no matter how difficult life may be there is beauty in the simplest things and tuning ourselves into it, changes everything (I know that's been true for my life) but not everyone can (necessarily) do that..
Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
