That's a pretty snappy opening line of dialog for a movie. It kicks off an adult fairy tale that "explains" the why and wherefores of Diane Arbus' creative genius and her break from her privileged up bringing.
Kidman, looking renewed and delectable, plays Arbus in 1958 who is still working with her husband as an assistant and photo stylist. The fairy tale begins when she spies a strange masked man moving in her building on the top floor in a secluded apartment. From here the movie becomes a strange mixture of fantasy, discovery, repulsion, and awe as Arbus develops a bizarre romantic relationship with the strange man and his freakish friends.
This film is less than tasty to the palate. Surely by design, it smacks so much of Lynch you would seemingly expect to see his name in the credits (you don't). It is beautifully designed and filmed with Kidman's delightful face filling the screen much of the time. Downey Jr., playing the strange man, does a terrific turn as a seductive Svengali leading her into a new vision of the world at large.
A visual tour de force yet unsettling. I cannot heartily recommend this film unless you can enjoy creativity over content.
