Spectacular and convincing special effects almost make up for the predictable story and mediocre acting here. Almost. Pierce Brosnan is a volcanologist from the U.S. Geological Society sent to a small Idaho resort town to investigate whether a nearby dormant volcano is about to blow. He befriends local mayor Linda Hamilton (!), who also runs the town deli/coffee shop. He wants to put the town on alert but his boss disagrees. The DVD director's commentary with the cinematographer is amazingly absent of almost any mention of the actors, almost as if there were a rift between them.
