I just saw this because I need to review the BD, so I can comment on DavidLD's post back in March.
>> There was no resolution to the plot line. The movie just seemed to end because 90 minutes were up. The imaginary kingdom just seemed to exist but for no apparent reason. <<
I saw the resolution in the boy reaching out to his younger sister who he previously rejected. Terabithia was just a symbol, a manifestation of the powerful imagination the kids tapped into. The protagonist showed his kid sister how to use their imagination and dreams to escape and transcend their problematic lives at home and in school.
>> The only thing I could figure out is that this is planned as a 3 movie set and we need to see the planned part 2 to resolve some of the plot elements. <<
No, it's fully resolved.
>> The girl apparently dies in the creek but we never see a body or a casket, <<
Well, this is after all a kids' movie. Just the concept of death is tough for kids...no reason to compound that or dwell on it more than necessary.
>> suggesting that she might have somehow passed over into Terabithia and is now ruling the kingdom as Queen, to be discovered there by the boy in the next installmemt whenever that might be. <<
No, the boy searched for her there when he went back to face the demon, which turned out to be just his father. And the fact that the father for the first time reached out to him and helped him deal with his pain made a great difference in how the movie resolved.
>> Sorta like the Search for Spock. But we are still uncertain as to whether Terabithia is real or a completely imaginary dream world. What is its purpose? <<
It seemed obvious to me that it was a completely imaginary world.
>> It was totally odd and out of place that the boy didn't invite the girl along on the museum field trip, since they had supposedly become such good friends. <<
It was a little selfish, but the teacher invited the boy, not the girl. The teacher wanted to show him the museum because of his artistic aptitude and because she probably knew enough about his family life to understand that he may not be exposed to art. The girl seemed to come from the opposite type of family. And it also tied into the guilt the boy felt about not including the friend in the field trip. He blamed himself for her death. It was an integral part of the plot.
>> And why would the girl try to go across the river if the boy wasn't there? <<
She may have been looking for him there since no one in his family knew where he was. I don't think she was the type to wait around if she wanted to do something. She was basically a latchkey kid.
>> If there eventually is another installent, I'm not sure I will bother, as there is not enough of a plot for me to care about these characters. Too much is left hanging to make the story interesting. The critics liked this one, but I disagree totally. <<
I don't see any reason for a sequel. Too much of Terabithia was shown...it was basically an excuse for the CGI wizards at disney to impress us with visuals and provide concrete evidence of the childrens' imaginary world. I didn't think it was the greatest movie ever made, but it was emotional and I could relate to it.
