"Clean Slate": Every frog has his day . . .

This 1982 film stars Noiret, Audran, Huppert as charcters locked into a rather drab existence in North Africa in 1938. Noiret is the lazy, bumbling police chief of a small town who is harassed by local criminals, abused and cuckolded by his wife, and debased by upper echelon police officers from headquarters. Then, suddenly, enough is enough. Noiret still projects his affable, bumbling character but now with the mind of a master criminal as he arranges the demise of all who have done him wrong. His plan of revenge oddly involves two women who actually care for him. At the end of the film we leave a confused, broken man who has "cleaned his slate" of all that was bad and good.

By modern standards this film does not hold up well but it is entertaining as it covers comedy, drama, and crime within its two-hour run time. It's also a kick seeing a very young, freckled Huppert who appears to be a teenager.

Recommended.
