Italian neo-realism films, and I'd argue one of the finest ever.
Based on Cain's "The Postman Always Rings Twice," but elevated to high art by Visconti's brilliant direction and the amazing performances by the star-crossed lovers. The wronged husband also is beautifully played, Visconti eschewing the easy path of making the victim of his heroes seem worthy of his terrible fate.
Cinematography, attributed to two men, is stellar. The opening shot from the truck interior, with the almost overwhelming score, sets the stage.
This is by far the best interpretation of the novel.
