'Rescue Dawn'

Most of you probably know that this is Werner Herzog's follow-up to 'Little Dieter Needs to Fly', the doc. about the Vietnam-era P.O.W. escape story of Dieter Dengler.

I won't waste your time 'reviewing' a movie when better are readily available, but there are a couple of points that were interesting to me that weren't brought up in the reviews I've read. For instance: The movie at first seems oddly stiff and detached, but I slowly realized that Herzog has eliminated all the usual artifacts of an actioner (even one based on true life events) that contrive to keep audience interest, i.e. cuts to fiances' left behind and worrying, commanders barking out search orders, sixties rock and roll to 'define' the era, etc. The narrative is absolutely straight in the sense that every scene contains the protagonist (Dengler, as portrayed by Christian Bale). This directorial method, along with the incredible detail, gives the viewer an increased sense of reality to what is being viewed. Your emotions will not be manipulated by the director, you will be forced to think about the reality of actual people being in the particular situations, and how that affects you personally.

Also, the soundtrack, composed by various artists but all symphonic, is both beautiful and subtle. It's used sparingly, but appropriately in certain scenes to foreshadow or add to the mood. In fact, I'll search for a CD of the soundtrack, and I'm not a particular fan of the genre.

That's it. I'll agree with most other reviews that the acting is formidable, the cinematography is beautiful, and the story incredible. And of course, once again, Werner is battling that damn jungle.

Recommended.
