Gritty, faded, stark and full of shit-kicking violence and murder. Charlie Bronson's "Death Wish" looks like a Disney production next to this.
This "classic tale" of a civilian's revenge is thoroughly updated for our times with tattooed, neonazi-looking, meth-cooking, psycho punks who kill for thrills. The atmosphere was so dreary I thought the film was three hours long (not so).
Kevin Bacon loses his son to a gangland slaying and his vengeance trips a war between him and the leader. John Goodman cameos as Psycho Dad of the Year and a pretty (but aging) Kelley Preston (Travolta) plays Bacon's wife.
One thing I noticed: The gang violence was so bad that the license plates on the cars had been painted black with white numbers. There was no way to tell where it was supposed to be or where it was filmed. Rightfully so--no good advertising here. (South Carolina was location.)
Unless you really want to see people act like animals--take a pass.
