Miyoshi Umeki R.I.P.

Miyoshi Umeki has passed at 78. In 1957 she became the first Asian actor to win an Academy Award for her supporting role opposite Red Buttons, who also won an Oscar for his role, in the film "Sayonara." She later went on to have significant roles in several major movies, including "Flower Drum Song", and many television shows, including a three year stint as co-star of "The Courtship of Eddy's Father."

In addition to her best supporting-actress Oscar win, she was a Tony and an Emmy Award nominee. She had been in retirement since 1972.

She was a beguiling screen presence and an accomplished scene stealer.
